HatchTech would like to share with you one if its new technical articles, written by Ir. Carla van der Pol

The present article discusses the influence of egg size and incubator design on eggshell temperature. Suboptimal eggshell temperatures during incubation have a detrimental effect on hatchability and chick quality. One factor that influences eggshell temperatures is egg size. A large egg runs a risk of becoming overheated when incubated together with small eggs because it has increased heat production and reduced heat loss capacity. Correct incubator design, with uniform high air velocity, can minimize these eggshell temperature differences within one batch of eggs.

E. coli Can Survive in Streambed Sediments for Months

Photo: Creek with shallow water showing underwater sediment.By Ann Perry

Studies by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists have confirmed that the presence of Escherichia coli pathogens in surface waters could result from the pathogen's ability to survive for months in underwater sediments. Most E. coli strains don't cause illness, but they are indicator organisms used by water quality managers to estimate fecal contamination.

Exposing sliced carrots to UV-B, one of the three kinds of ultraviolet light in sunshine, can boost the antioxidant activity of the colorful veggie. That's according to preliminary studies by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) research food technologist and research leader Tara H. McHugh. She is with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency.

USDA Scientists, Cooperators Create the First Genomic Map of the Domesticated Turkey

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) researchers and their university colleagues have sequenced the majority of the genome of Meleagris gallopavo, the domesticated turkey, creating the first-ever turkey genome map. The nearly complete map could help growers to more efficiently produce bigger, meatier turkeys. The research is reported today in PLoS Biology, an online journal of the Public Library of Science.

Natural Selenium Coproduct Good for Sheep

A ewe and two lambs in a straw-filled pen. Link to photo informationAnimals as well as humans need selenium, a trace mineral and component of antioxidants, to stay healthy. Inadequate selenium in sheep reduces conception rates, increases neonatal mortality, and in some instances, causes "white muscle disease"-nutritional muscular dystrophy. Selenium deficiency in sheep and cattle costs livestock producers an estimated $545 million annually in losses and affects livestock in more than 35 states where regions are deficient in the mineral.
